Buying local is a widespread message that is being commonly advertised. The consensus is that local food is overall superior because it is being produced closer to home, one’s town, or country. Therefore, the latest trend is to buy local organic produce that seems to be healthier compared to imported options. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to buying local, and it is important to understand bot the positive and negative sides to buying local. The most prominent advantage of buying local food is to support local farmers (Coelho, Coelho, & Egerer, 2018). If there are no consumers who purchase local produce, there will be no farmers left to support the economy. In addition, this brings consumers closer to farmers, and the latter understand the needs of their potential customers, adjusting supply accordingly. In addition, local food is usually grown from non-chemical seeds, which results in fresh, healthy, and organic produce that has a superior taste.
On the downside, buying local food is usually costlier, which is the most significant disadvantage consumers typically point out. This occurs due to the higher costs of smaller distribution channels and local production, which are often reflected in the price. In addition, there is a limited selection of local products because they depend on the season. For instance, if cherries are not in season, it is only possible to purchase them if they are grown in warmer countries. Besides, because they are not treated with chemicals, local foods tend to get spoiled faster. Therefore, while buying local food is good for the economy and the maintenance of farmlands, it may not be affordable to everyone while buying in bulk is risky in terms of spoiling.
